Interview with Brett Griswold
Brett Griswold is a sculptor and assemblage artist based in Southern California. His works are featured in the February 2015 exhibit "With A Little Help From My Friends" at Daniel Rolnik Gallery
What medium did you use to create your piece for "With A Little Help From My Friends" at Daniel Rolnik Gallery?
All of the pieces used for this show were made with concrete, bones, and steel.
Where are you from & what about that place influences your art?
I am originally from Lakewood, CA. But what really influenced my pieces from this show was the time I spent in the desert. A few years ago, I went with some friends to buy a couple acres in Pioneertown, CA.
Did you go to art school?
I did not go to art school. I went to junior college for a year and a half - on and off - but wasn’t really into the general education part of it and ultimately decided it isn’t for me. Oh and being a dropout was cooler to my 15 year old self. Haha!
Would you rather have aliens or monsters be real and why?
Aliens without a doubt, anything out of this world is more mind boggling. In fact, my next tattoo idea is a crashed UFO. Haha!
What's your favorite radio station and a few bands you're listening to?
Oh, I wouldn’t dare to try to listen to the radio. When I'm occasionally in the car with someone who does, I get very antsy, those commercials just don’t stop! Lately I've been really into the band Swan. So much so, that I recently bought tickets to see them in San Fran because I didn't think they would be playing any closer to my area, but just a few days after booking my flight the band announced a show less than 30 minutes from my house. Haha!
What's something weird and funny that has happened you?
Funny and weird, well I don’t know what that would be. I'm sure other people would be able to answer this one for me, but I don’t find too much to be weird and my sense of humor is kinda dark so to be mildly appropriate I'm gonna leave that one alone.
What was your last adventure & what's your next adventure?
Adventure as in trip would be a few years back when I went with two of my buddies to Peru to do a 5 day hike to Machu Picchu. The next adventure is in May when some friends and I are going to a 3 day Psychedelic music festival in Austin Texas.
Is anyone in your family also artistic? If not, how different are they? If so, what's their art like?
My father is somewhat of an amateur wildlife photographer. His stuff is pretty good, working at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands gives him the opportunities to see and observe a rare wildlife environment and he takes advantage of that opportunity.
What was your childhood room like?
My childhood room was a wreck! I was a big Marilyn Manson fan and had lots of posters and crosses on the walls, then I started spray painting in my room (without a mask of course). That’s one thing I have to give my parents credit for, putting up with my offsetting style. Haha
How can art make the world a better place?
Art I think brings people together while still allowing them to think for themselves. A community full of individuals.
Burgers, Burritos, or Brownies?
Burritos all day, they're full of dead animals.
